In 1952, at just six years old, Paul Alexander’s life took a dramatic turn when he contracted polio during a severe outbreak in the United States. The virus left him paralyzed from the neck down, unable to breathe independently.

Doctors placed him in an iron lung—a large mechanical respirator that would become his home for the next seven decades. Despite the grim prognosis, Paul’s indomitable spirit shone through. He once recalled waking up in a hospital ward filled with rows of children in iron lungs, a haunting image that underscored the epidemic’s impact.

Defying Expectations and Pursuing Education

Confined to the iron lung, Paul refused to let his condition define him. He became one of the first home-schooled students in the Dallas Independent School District, mastering subjects through memorization and determination. His academic excellence led him to graduate second in his high school class. Paul earned a bachelor’s degree and later a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas at Austin, overcoming significant physical barriers to attend classes and complete his studies.

After passing the bar in 1986, Paul embarked on a legal career, representing clients in court from a modified wheelchair that held him upright. He became a passionate advocate for disability rights, using his experiences to inspire and educate others. Paul’s resilience and dedication made him a respected figure in the legal community and beyond.

Authoring His Life Story

In 2020, Paul published his memoir, “Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung,” a title referencing his achievement of breathing independently for three minutes—a milestone that took a year to accomplish. He wrote the book using a pen attached to a stick held in his mouth, a testament to his perseverance and desire to share his journey.

Embracing Social Media and Inspiring Millions

In his later years, Paul embraced social media, creating a TikTok account in January 2024. He shared insights into his life, answered questions about living in an iron lung, and advocated for polio vaccination. His candid and uplifting videos garnered over 300,000 followers and more than 4.5 million likes, resonating with audiences worldwide.
