James Lee Williams—professionally known as The Vivienne—the first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, was found dead in their bathtub at home in Cheshire on January 5.
A coroner’s inquest on June 30 concluded Williams had probably been deceased for a couple of days before their neighbor discovered them and called authorities.
Toxicology Reveals The Vivienne Suffered an Acute Ketamine Overdose
Forensic tests and toxicology confirmed high levels of ketamine in the system—enough to cause cardio-respiratory arrest. Five empty ketamine bags were found at the scene. Senior Coroner Jacqueline Devonish ruled the death a “misadventure,” clear that there was no intent to self-harm.
Hard-Fought Sobriety and a Private Relapse
Williams, 32, had been open about past struggles with addiction. They revealed they had abstained for several years after winning the UK Drag Race. Sadly, this appeared to be a relapse. Family, friends, and their manager emphasized that ketamine use did not define their life or legacy.

A Talented Life on-Stage and Screen as The Vivienne
Born in Wales and a rising star in the drag world, The Vivienne took home the crown in 2019. They became the first non-American winner to join Drag Race All Stars. Their career soared with TV roles and West End theatre appearances, including The Wizard of Oz and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Friends remember a performer who “just wanted to make people laugh,” while ex-husband David Ludford spoke of a creative spark and deep bond the two shared.
Family’s Message of Compassion and Caution
Williams’ sister Chanel, while grieving, urged public reflection: ketamine is often underestimated yet can be lethal. The family plans to collaborate with drug charities to raise awareness and push for the reclassification of ketamine as a Class A drug.

Community Remembers The Vivienne with Love
Tributes have poured in from Drag Race co-stars and fans worldwide. On Reddit, many expressed deep grief and recounted personal memories with Williams, calling them “amazing,” “integral to UK drag,” and a “bright light”. RuPaul and other peers emphasized their warmth, generosity, and talent, insisting they won’t be defined by a tragic mistake.
