In a powerful and emotional statement, Becca Good, the wife of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, has spoken out for the first time since her partner was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. Becca’s statement was shared with Minnesota Public Radio and has since been widely reported and reposted by news outlets.
Becca described Renee as someone “made of sunshine” — a person whose kindness and compassion radiated to everyone she met. “Renee sparkled. She literally sparkled,” Becca wrote, emphasising that her wife lived her life by the belief that “there is kindness in the world” and that people should nurture it wherever it is found.
What Happened That Day
Becca’s account also offered insight into the moments that led up to the tragedy. She said that on the day of the shooting, they had stopped to support neighbours in their Minneapolis community during a federal immigration enforcement operation. “We had whistles. They had guns,” she said, drawing a stark contrast between the peaceful intent of their presence and the heavily armed federal response.
Video footage later released — including cellphone video from the ICE agent involved — shows Renee calmly telling the officer, “That’s fine, dude, I’m not mad at you” while the agent recorded the scene. Becca was visible outside the vehicle, at one point urging Renee to leave the scene as the confrontation unfolded.
The incident quickly escalated: after some back-and-forth, shots were fired into the SUV, striking Renee in what authorities have described as a self-defense action — a point local leaders and critics strongly dispute.
Good Family in Mourning
Renee and Becca Good were raising their young family together in Minneapolis, including a 6-year-old son. Becca’s statement highlighted not only the personal loss but also her commitment to raising their child according to the values the couple shared — compassion, kindness, and hope for a better world. She wrote that while she is now tasked with doing this alone, she intends to maintain Renee’s legacy of love and empathy.

Her statement resonated with many who have followed the case, particularly amid nationwide scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement tactics following the Minneapolis incident. Becca also thanked the many people who have reached out to support the family, noting that the kindness shown in the wake of tragedy reflects the values her wife lived by.
Public Reaction and Broader Debate
The shooting and Becca’s tribute have intensified public debate. Minneapolis has seen large protests and vigils opposing federal immigration actions, with critics of the shooting questioning the justification of lethal force and calling for accountability.
Minnesota leadership, including the mayor and state officials, has also pushed back against early federal narratives about the incident, and there are ongoing calls for an independent investigation and transparency regarding evidence and law enforcement procedures.
