“The Band”‘s lead guitarist and songwriter, Robbie Robertson has passed away at the age of 80. The Rock Music Legend was announced dead by his management team on Wednesday in Los Angeles. It was said that the guitarist had been suffering from a long illness.

Jared Levine, who has been Robbie Robertson’s manager for over 34 years, has stated that:

Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, including his wife, Janet, his ex-wife, Dominique, her partner Nicholas, and his children Alexandra, Sebastian, Delphine, and Delphine’s partner Kenny.

Robertson recently completed his fourteenth film music project with frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon.’ In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to support a new Woodland Cultural Center.

Robbie Robertson’s Musical Legacy

Not only is the rockstar known as a legendary lead guitarist, but he also has the songwriting rights to many works such as “The Weight”, “Up On Cripple Creek” and even “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” is his most controversial song that was supposedly narrated by Confederate Soldiers.

Robertson and The Band started out by playing music for singer Ronnie Hawkins. Then they became famous for playing alongside Bob Dylan in 1965 when they were called The Hawks. They got even more famous on their own with albums like “Music From Big Pink” in 1968 and “The Band” in 1969.

Later in 1976, Robertson and The Band teamed up with director Martin Scorsese for a special performance, which they said would be their last show. This event had many famous guest performers. Scorsese made a movie about this concert called “The Last Waltz,” and people could watch it in theaters starting in 1978.

Following the passing of Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999, and Levon Helm in 2012, Robertson becomes the fourth member of The Band to have passed away. The group’s lone surviving member is Garth Hudson, who played the keyboard and organ.

One thing is for certain, we will be remembering Robbie Robertson for a long time! The Band will always remain iconic to the musical legacy and their names will surely live on.
