What is SAG-AFTRA?

SAG-AFTRA stands for the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. It is a labor union representing approximately 160,000 actors, announcers, broadcasters, journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and other media professionals.

SAG-AFTRA is responsible for negotiating and enforcing contracts for its members, advocating for their rights and benefits, and providing various services and resources to support their careers.

Regarding how SAG-AFTRA chooses awards for actors, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards are unique in that they are selected entirely by actors themselves. The SAG-AFTRA membership votes for the winners, making the awards a reflection of peer recognition within the industry. This aspect often lends additional prestige to the SAG Awards, as they are seen as a direct acknowledgment of excellence by fellow actors.
