The soulful, electrifying voice behind Sly and the Family Stone, Sly Stone (born Sylvester Stewart), passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, in Los Angeles. He was 82.
His family confirmed he had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other health complications.
Sly Stone, a Trailblazer of Sound and Integration
Stone revolutionized music with his groundbreaking fusion of funk, rock, soul, gospel, and psychedelia. As the frontman of his multi-racial, co-ed ensemble, he delivered hits like “Everyday People,” “Dance to the Music,” and “Family Affair.” His performance at Woodstock in 1969—keyboard blazing, Afro haloed—became the stuff of legend.

Contemporaries and later icons alike cited him as an influence: Questlove called him “a giant,” George Clinton called him “the most talented musician I know,” and his impact echoed through artists from Prince to hip-hop icons.
A Life of Highs… and Hard Lessons
Born in Denton, Texas, in 1943, Stone’s musical path began early in gospel ensembles with his siblings. By his teens, he was a DJ in California, merging diverse genres and shaping his vision. In 1966, he formed his own inclusive band that would redefine music and culture.
However, his peak in the late 1960s gave way to personal struggles. Drug addiction disrupted tours, and his creative evolution darkened with haunting albums like There’s a Riot Goin’ On. By the ’80s, Sly had largely withdrawn, battling addiction and living in seclusion.
Redemption & Legacy Confirmed
Though Stone slipped from the limelight for years, his legacy was restored in full: a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1993, a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2017, a 2023 memoir (Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)), and an acclaimed documentary (Sly Lives!) all underscored his enduring influence. His recent work included completing a screenplay based on his life.
Remembered by Generations
Stone is survived by his children, siblings, and extended family. A heartfelt family statement noted he was surrounded by loved ones. “While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come.”
Fellow artists paid tribute—Questlove reflected on Sly’s deep humanity, while others celebrated his barrier-breaking honesty and soul-stirring grooves. His music didn’t just entertain—it brought people together in hope and harmony.

Sly Stone envisioned music not merely as entertainment but as an act of unity, and he succeeded. He mirrored the social shifts of his era, demanding inclusivity on stage and on record. Though personal demons followed, he never lost the essence of his message.
He once said, “If you want me to stay, let me know…” Today, the world still echoes “Dance to the Music” and belongs to “Everyday People.” His legacy lives on in every beat he inspired.
