Substitute Teacher Guilty After S*xual Assault of 11-Year-Old During “Play Dates”

In a deeply disturbing case from Illinois, former substitute teacher Ally Bardfield, 34, has pleaded guilty to one count of predatory criminal sexual assault.

She was accused of engaging in sexual activity with an 11-year-old student during “play dates” at her home between 2023 and May 2024. These visits were framed by Bardfield as harmless, but the reality was far darker—a betrayal of the trust placed in educators to protect children.

How the Abuse Came to Light

The abuse came to light when the boy’s mother noticed unsettling changes in her son’s behavior.

Concerned, she checked his phone and discovered explicit messages exchanged between her son and Bardfield, along with payments up to $700 sent from the teacher via Cash App. When authorities followed up, the child disclosed that the abuse occurred during the supervised visits to Bardfield’s house.

Guilt and Admission

During a courtroom appearance, Bardfield initially blamed the minor, claiming the child had made sexual advances toward her. However, she ultimately admitted guilt, acknowledging that sexual acts did take place.

The Mount Zion Police Department condemned the behavior, calling it a severe breach of trust. Bardfield’s resignation from Decatur Public Schools came shortly after the allegations surfaced.

Legal Consequences Ahead

Under Illinois law, predatory criminal sexual assault of a child is a particularly serious charge, usually resulting in decades of imprisonment. Bardfield faces a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison under a partial plea deal.

Her sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 25. During the proceedings, authorities emphasized that no child should ever be placed in a position of such betrayal.

The case shook the local community deeply. Parents, educators, and students found it hard to reconcile the image of a caring teacher with the crime she committed.

School officials have reaffirmed their commitment to student safety and have strengthened safeguards to prevent similar violations in the future. Counseling services have been offered to the victim and others impacted by the news.
