In a small Tennessee town, a 16-year-old high school student made a powerful decision: she legally changed her name from Dixie to Skye, with her mother’s full support.

But this wasn’t just about wanting a prettier name — according to her mom and the girl herself, the switch came after years of relentless bullying tied to the historical baggage behind the name “Dixie.”

Why the Name “Dixie” Became a Target

The name “Dixie” has taken on a controversial meaning in recent decades, largely due to its association with the American South and the Confederacy. This charged history made the teenager’s school hallways a minefield for mockery.

Her classmates didn’t hold back. She says they called her things like “Dixie Dust” and “Dixie Normous” — cruel insults that echoed beyond just teasing. Even worse, some of her peers accused her of supporting racism simply because of what her name symbolized.

A Name That Didn’t Reflect Her True Self

Skye — the name she always felt connected to — was actually her mom’s first pick when she was born. Her father went with “Dixie,” though, and the name stuck. But over time, she realized the name didn’t reflect who she really was.

In interviews, she’s described feeling like her name was a mismatch for her identity — but also burdened by history that she never asked for. Skye said the change made her feel “more like me” and that using her new name makes her genuinely happy.

A Supportive Mom, and a Not-So-Cheap Change

Danielle Remp, her mom, didn’t hesitate when her daughter asked to make things official. “I said yes, no questions asked,” she told reporters.

But legally changing your name isn’t free — Remp is saving up $200 to cover the required fees. Still, for her, the cost is worth it if it means her daughter can walk through school unburdened. She said, “If changing her name makes her feel better about herself, why would I say no?”

Bigger Than Just a Name

This story isn’t just about a name swap — it’s a look into how a simple word can carry heavy cultural weight. For the teen, it’s about self-expression, safety, and being seen for who she really is.

On social media, the response has been mixed. Some people praised her mom’s support, calling her a hero for validating her daughter’s feelings. Others questioned whether she was giving in too quickly, saying she should teach her child to “deal with it” instead. But in the end, the decision was about mental health — and respect.

Why This Story Resonates

  1. Identity isn’t just a name — for some, a name shapes how we feel about ourselves.
  2. Bullying can come from unexpected places — even a name with historical baggage can be used as a weapon.
  3. Parents really do matter — having someone in your corner who believes in you makes all the difference.
