Chandler Crews, now 31 and based in Maryland, first underwent limb-lengthening surgery at 16 to address challenges caused by achondroplasia—a genetic condition that impairs bone growth, often resulting in adult heights between 3’6″ and 4’8″.

Struggling with everyday tasks like washing her hair, using public restrooms, or driving, she opted for corrective surgery to live more independently and comfortably.

The Surgeries & Physical Transformation

Starting in August 2010, Chandler underwent her first surgery at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics. Over the next few years, she completed two more procedures. The surgeries included bone cuts and external or internal devices to gradually stretch bones, correcting bowed legs and improving spinal health.

Thanks to insurance covering most of the nearly $2 million cost, she grew from 3’10” to nearly 5 feet—now standing about 4’11¾”.

Patients like Chandler often undergo three to six months of distraction—slowly lengthening bone segments daily—followed by extensive physical therapy to rebuild strength, mobility, and independence.

Everyday Impact & Emotional Relief After the Surgery

The surgery results went far beyond increased height. Chandler describes being able to comfortably converse face-to-face as a “game changer.”

Now she can hold her own in everyday tasks—tying her hair into a ponytail, driving safely, and maintaining hygiene without cumbersome aids. She describes herself as “comfortable short,” a phrase that reflects both physical ease and emotional well-being.

Surgery Advocacy: The Chandler Project

Inspired by her journey, Chandler launched The Chandler Project—a nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness about achondroplasia and promoting advancements in both medical therapies and limb-lengthening options.

Through education and outreach, the project aims to provide support for individuals facing similar decisions and to foster a community where choices around one’s body are respected and informed.

Why It Matters

Limb-lengthening surgery remains controversial, particularly in the dwarfism community. Yet Chandler’s story illustrates its potential for transformative benefits—physically, emotionally, and socially.

It highlights how medical interventions, combined with self-advocacy, can redefine independence.

Her transparency sheds light on a rarely discussed option and opens doors for dialogue about adaptive technologies, acceptance, and medical autonomy.
