Over the July 4 weekend, Central Texas was struck by catastrophic flash floods. More than 10 inches of rain fell in mere hours, causing the Guadalupe River to rise over 26 feet in under an hour. Communities celebrating Independence Day were caught off-guard by the deluge.
Tragic Loss and Missing Loved Ones
At least 104 people have been confirmed dead—including 28 children—while dozens remain missing. Among the victims were residents of Kerr County and attendees at Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp. Dozens of campers and a counselor are still unaccounted for. Families like the Badons, who were searching for their daughter, were devastated when a father discovered the body of a missing child during their search.

Heroic Rescue Amid Chaos
Despite the devastation, over 850 people have been rescued by air, boat, ground teams, and volunteers. Crews from other states, including Mexico, joined the Coast Guard and National Guard. In one remarkable rescue, a Coast Guard officer saved 165 people. However, ongoing rain and saturated terrain continue to hamper efforts.
Infrastructure and Warning Failures
Criticism is growing over slow alerts and outdated monitoring systems. Kerr County reportedly lacked operating sirens when flood warnings were issued, drawing public outrage. Some families claim they received no warning and were blindsided by the rising floodwaters. Officials have vowed to investigate and improve warning infrastructure.
Scammers Exploit Tragedy
Tragically, the aftermath has seen scams targeting families of missing children. Some fraudsters falsely claimed they held missing kids and demanded ransom. Authorities have condemned the exploitation, urging the public to donate through reputable sources instead.
Shared Grief and Calls to Action
Communities across Texas have united in grief. Funerals have become public spectacles of mourning. People shared stories of loss—like 8-year-old twin sisters found holding hands—and survival tales such as families clinging to trees as homes disappeared around them.

Public figures, including former President Bush and actor Matthew McConaughey, have expressed condolences. Meanwhile, local officials pressed for better disaster preparedness and federal funding for flood warning networks.
Road to Recovery
The flood zone remains under flash-flood watch as more rain is expected. Recovery efforts include creating burn bans, limiting recreational access to contaminated waters, and expanding search operations with drones and divers. Relief groups have been mobilized, and state and federal agencies are coordinating a longer-term rebuilding plan.
