What do you think happens to you after you die?

Well, for one woman, this question had an answer. Except that instead of actually dying, this Texas mom witnessed her own murder investigation.

You might be asking yourselves, what? Bear with us. What if the person crucial to solving their own murder was the victim themselves? This is the story of the Texas mom.

Texas Mom Witnessed Her Own Murder

In a “48 Hours” investigation, a Texas mother’s recorded words were crucial evidence in convicting her husband, Joel Pellot, of murdering her in September 2020. Pellot is serving a life sentence for the murder of Maria Eugenia Muñoz, his 31-year-old wife and mother of their two sons.

Initially thought to be a suicide by pill overdose, Maria Eugenia Muñoz’s death was reevaluated after her journal entries, which showed no signs of suicidal thoughts, were uncovered. Instead, the journals portrayed a woman preparing to move forward after discovering her husband’s infidelity, as reported by the CBS show.

How Did This Happen?

Joel Pellot, a nurse anesthetist, called 911 in the early hours of September 22, 2020, reporting that his wife, whom he had been married to for 10 years, was unresponsive and possibly overdosed on pills.

Police immediately grew suspicious of Joel Pellot’s conduct and his account surrounding his wife’s death. Pellot appeared visibly nervous, sweating heavily, and struggled to provide coherent details about discovering Maria Eugenia Muñoz.

Additionally, authorities discovered a syringe wrapper on the floor and a needle catheter on the stairs, raising further questions about the circumstances leading to her death.

What Did They Find Out?

Investigators discovered that Joel Pellot had been involved with a coworker named Janet Arredondo for two years and was living with her at the time of his wife’s death. Pellot claimed that Maria Eugenia Muñoz knew about their relationship for some time.

Additionally, the medical examiner found no pill residue in Muñoz’s stomach but did find a small puncture mark on her right elbow crease, adding further intrigue to the case.

The medical examiner concluded that Maria Eugenia Muñoz died from mixed drug intoxication but ruled out suicide after reviewing her journal entries and speaking with her friends. A day before her death, Muñoz wrote in her journal, “What is it that I want? #1 Move forward,” as reported by the news show.

After the Autopsy: Turns Out the Texas Mom Was a Witness to Her Own Murder

Joel Pellot’s former boss, Dr. John Huntsinger, became suspicious after learning of the autopsy results. He advised investigators to conduct a comprehensive toxicology screening.

Four months later, the results showed that Maria Eugenia Muñoz died from a lethal mixture of drugs including morphine, Demerol, Versed, propofol, ketamine, lidocaine, and Narcan. These are medications commonly used in surgery and accessible to a nurse anesthetist like Pellot.

Propofol, found in Maria Eugenia Muñoz’s system, is administered exclusively by injection. The toxicology report and Dr. John Huntsinger indicated that the amount present would have caused her to cease breathing.

According to Janet Arredondo, Joel Pellot’s mistress, Pellot would bring home propofol from work for recreational use. This was detailed in the “48 Hours” report.

What Happened to the Couple?

Prosecutors allege that Joel Pellot drugged Maria Eugenia Muñoz to sedate her before injecting propofol to ensure she couldn’t be revived by first responders when he eventually called 911. Days before her death, they had a heated argument. This was after Muñoz found Pellot’s car parked outside his mistress Janet Arredondo’s house.

Pellot reacted angrily, damaging his car’s windshield. The following morning, Muñoz texted Pellot about hiring a divorce lawyer, prompting him to suggest a less costly approach initially but later asking for a calm discussion in an email.

Joel Pellot expressed deep sadness in an email, writing, “I am so sad I am hurting inside.” Despite their plans to meet on Monday night, Maria Eugenia Muñoz tragically passed away early the following day.
