Kaura Taylor, a 21-year-old mother from Texas, had been missing since May when her family learned she was not missing at all—but living in a wooded camp in the Scottish Highlands with an “African Tribe”.

The group she joined calls itself the Kingdom of Kubala, led by a man and woman styling themselves as King Atehene and Queen Nandi. Taylor has adopted the name “Asnat of Atehene” and claims she voluntarily fled what she describes as a toxic and abusive family. Meanwhile, her relatives in the U.S. are full of grief and disbelief at her sudden disappearance.

Family Rejects Her Claims

Taylor’s family has pushed back strongly against her statements. Her aunt described her upbringing as “very sheltered and protected,” and dismisses the tribe’s practices as “hogwash.”

While Taylor insists she is not missing, but free, her family continues to hope that her six-month tourist visa’s expiry in November will bring her home—or at least allow them to reconnect.

The Kingdom of Kubala: Is the “African Tribe” a Myth or Movement?

The Kingdom of Kubala claims to be descended from lost Hebrew tribes deported centuries ago from the British Isles. Living off-grid in tents near Jedburgh, Scotland, the group rejects local laws and follows spiritual doctrines, calling their presence a “pilgrimage” to reclaim ancestral land.

They bathe in springwater, live minimally, and believe a divine mandate guides them. Eviction notices and even arson attacks have driven them deeper into the wilderness, prompting assistance offers from sympathetic locals and pending intervention from Scottish authorities.

Authorities and Campaigners Step In and Discuss the “African Tribe”

Scottish Borders Council and Police Scotland are closely monitoring the developments. Though authorities have not forcibly removed Taylor, they are offering housing advice and welfare support as part of a cautious, compassionate response.

Community opinions remain divided—some locals support the peaceful off-grid existence; others worry about manipulative dynamics, potential mental health issues, and legal breaches.

A Crossroads of Choice and Concern

Taylor’s situation highlights the tension between respecting personal autonomy and ensuring safety. She identifies as an adult able to choose her path, while her family paints her as vulnerable and possibly influenced by unusual beliefs.

The coming weeks may prove pivotal—whether Taylor returns home voluntarily or remains with the tribe, the emotional stakes and legal implications are only beginning to unfold.
