Consequently, no one expected Trump to remain on stage as Chelsea celebrated their victory. The U.S. president handed Cole Palmer the “Player of the Tournament” award and stood in front of the cameras. What followed, however, shocked viewers.

Trump seized the opportunity in his interview with DAZN reporter Emily Austin to boast about his political achievements. He declared, “We were doing badly as a country, but now we have a hot country, and I think soccer will be hot too.” Trump also criticized the previous administration, shifting the conversation from football to politics.

When asked about the U.S. national soccer team’s future, Trump ignored the question. Instead, he highlighted his political and financial successes. His remarks prompted immediate backlash, with fans and social media users expressing frustration online.

Journalist Alfie House from the Daily Echo tweeted, “Why is DAZN broadcasting a political interview with Donald Trump? This is absurd.” Other users labeled the interview “embarrassing,” with one accusing Trump of “hitting on the blonde interviewer” while speaking nonsense.

For example, this wasn’t Trump’s first foray into football-related controversy. Earlier in the Club World Cup tournament, he invited Juventus to the White House and had the team awkwardly stand behind him as he discussed bombing Iran. U.S. player Timothy Weah later called the moment “weird.”

Trump continues to merge politics with sport, often drawing criticism. While sports are seen as a unifying force, Trump’s actions raise the question: Can politics and sports ever remain separate?
