The faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square awaited the announcement with bated breath. When the cardinal protodeacon declared “Habemus Papam,” the world learned that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost had been chosen as the 267th pontiff, taking the name Pope Leo XIV.

This marked the first time an American had ascended to the papacy.

Who is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost – Pope Leo XIV?

Early Life and Education

Born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Francis Prevost grew up in a devout Catholic family with French, Italian, and Spanish roots. His father, Louis, was an educator and catechist, while his mother, Mildred, worked as a librarian.

Prevost’s early involvement in the Church included serving as an altar boy and attending the parish school at St. Mary of the Assumption near Dolton, Illinois.

He pursued higher education at Villanova University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1977. Feeling a calling to religious life, he joined the Order of Saint Augustine the same year. He professed his solemn vows in 1981 and was ordained a priest in Rome in 1982.

Prevost furthered his studies at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum), obtaining a licentiate and doctorate in Canon Law by 1987.

Missionary Work in Peru

In 1985, Prevost embarked on missionary work in Peru, serving in the Territorial Prelature of Chulucanas. His roles included chancellor, seminary rector, professor of canon law, and judicial vicar. He became deeply connected to the Peruvian people, eventually obtaining Peruvian citizenship.

His commitment to the community and the Church’s mission in Latin America solidified his reputation as a compassionate and dedicated leader.

Leadership Roles

Prevost’s leadership qualities led to his election as Prior Provincial of the Augustinians in Chicago in 1999. Two years later, he was elected Prior General of the worldwide Augustinian order, serving two six-year terms until 2013.

In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him as the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, and he became its bishop in 2015. His tenure was marked by efforts to address social issues and strengthen the local Church.

Service in the Vatican

In January 2023, Prevost was appointed Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, a significant role involving the selection of bishops worldwide.

He was elevated to the rank of cardinal in September 2023. His work in the Vatican was characterized by a commitment to inclusivity and reform, aligning with Pope Francis’s vision for the Church.
