The tumultuous relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard reached a boiling point in 2022 with a highly publicized defamation trial.

This trial, following a string of previous legal encounters, became a media sensation with millions tuning in to witness the explosive accusations and counter-accusations.

But why didn’t he look her in the eye? This seemingly simple gesture, devoid of eye contact throughout the trial, raised many questions and speculation.

Was it a deliberate act of defiance? A tactic to avoid emotional vulnerability? Or perhaps something deeper, a secret promise whispered between them in the ashes of their relationship?

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s Trial History

To answer that, we will delve into the tumultuous history of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, a relationship that stretches far beyond accusations and counter-accusations of the 2022 defamation trial.

When Did Depp And Heard Meet?

Depp and Heard met in 2011 and were married in 2015. Their relationship dissolved quickly, with Heard filing for a restraining order just 15 months later, alleging domestic abuse. Depp denied the claims, and the couple settled their divorce in 2016.

The Defamation Lawsuit

In 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post titled “I Spoke Up Against Sexual Violence – And Faced Our Culture’s Wrath. That Has to Change.”

Though Depp was not named, his lawyers argued the article falsely implied he was an abuser. This led Depp to sue Heard for $50 million in defamation damages. Heard countersued for $100 million, claiming Depp’s denials damaged her reputation.

The Trial

The six-week trial became a spectacle, live-streamed for the world to see. Both Depp and Heard took the stand, detailing their experiences in the relationship.

Depp denied all allegations of abuse and claimed Heard was the actual aggressor. Heard maintained her claims of physical and emotional abuse throughout their marriage.

The Johnny Depp Amber Heard “Eye Contact” Moment

One of the most talked-about moments involved Depp’s lack of eye contact with Heard during her testimony. Heard’s lawyer pointed this out, implying guilt on Depp’s part.

However, Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, revealed a deeper reason. Vasquez played a recording from the couple’s final meeting in 2016 where Depp can be heard saying, “You will not see my eyes again.” This recording suggested a pre-existing agreement between them, not an admission of guilt.

The Verdict

After weeks of testimony and deliberation, the jury sided with Depp, finding Heard liable on all three counts of defamation. Depp was awarded $15 million in damages (later reduced to $10.35 million due to Virginia law). Heard was awarded $2 million on one of her counterclaims.
