There was this Reddit post about a woman breaking up with her partner because he was ridiculously messy. It got a lot of attention because, apparently, cleanliness habits can be a big deal in relationships. But what exactly happened? What was the specific issue that led to the breakup? What do the studies about single men’s ‘Gross’ habits expose? Continue reading to find out.
Bed Sheet Conflicts
A Reddit user, @Important-Anteater90, recently shared her breakup story caused by her boyfriend’s disgustingly infrequent bed sheet washing. According to their text conversation, he washed his sheets only once every two months, or sometimes even less. When she asked him to do it more often, he brushed off her concerns, leading to their breakup.
“The text conversation that foreshadowed our breakup.” This was the caption she posted on Reddit, sharing messages with her ex when they discussed the issue.
In the text, you can see her asking her then-boyfriend “How often did you wash the sheets”. The question came after he complained that she was just adding up more work for him asking to wash the sheets every week.
“They don’t need to be washed every week,” he wrote. “Ur just creating more work for me lmao.”
The conversion leads to a shocking revelation for his then-girlfriend. He told her “like once every other month… If that”.
The now ex-girlfriend revealed other details about his general hygiene, telling the Reddit community
“He also never flushed the toilet. I would walk in and be greeted by his massive dumps. Or step in a p**s-soaked tile.“
According to her, he kept his nasty habits a secret. She wrote, “When we discussed moving in and chore habits, he only told me what I wanted to hear. I was bamboozled.”
After three months of living together, she left him.
A lot of commenters agreed about the thing being absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. They supported the women for dumping him saying things like, “Your ex is a walking red flag and gross. You dodged a particularly gross bullet there.”
“That’s so foul – I don’t think I could share a space with someone like that,” wrote another one.
Single Men ‘Gross’ Habit Exposed
This incident shed light on a larger issue: a study found that 45% of single men wash their bed sheets only every four months, and 12% do so whenever they remember, which could mean even longer gaps.
On the other hand, 62% of single women are diligent about changing their bedding once every two weeks. However, 29% of men admitted to washing their sheets with the same frequency. There is hope!
When it comes to those who are not single and are instead in a relationship, the most common response was washing their sheets every three weeks, with just over a third, or 35%, claiming this frequency. Following closely behind, 27% mentioned that they only wash their sheets once a month.
Experts recommend washing sheets every two weeks to keep dust mites and bacteria at bay, but many seem unaware or unconcerned about this.
The post also highlighted gender disparities in household chores, with women often shouldering the majority of responsibilities, leading to resentment and frustration.
In summary, this story serves as a reminder of the importance of hygiene and shared responsibilities in relationships and households. Bottom line: being on the same page about cleanliness is crucial if you’re thinking about moving in together.
