Worst City in the World? One Traveller’s Bitter Take on Conakry

Drew Binsky has visited every single country in the world — yes, all 197 of them — documenting his journey on YouTube. Even with a passport stamped from corner to corner, he admits not all places were created equal.

The City That Left a Scar

When asked which city he regretted visiting, the answer was immediate: Conakry, the capital of Guinea. He recalled how, just ten minutes into his arrival, he’d already been stopped by police. “We’ve been walking around for about 10 minutes and we’re already stopped by two policemen,” he said.

A coup had just broken out, soldiers with shields and bulletproof vests lined the streets, and the air was tense like “war was about to break out.”

A Mix of Fear and Frustration

Binsky painted a bleak picture: a city that “smelt like trash,” where he says he was kicked out of a restaurant with no explanation, and where the local people seemed unwelcoming. “Other than a quiet visit to a mosque,” he said, “I found nothing going on in the capital of Guinea… and it’s probably a place that I will never visit again.”

What Makes This Stand Out

It’s rare for someone who has literally travelled everywhere to call out one city as the worst. But Conakry’s combination of political unrest, policing issues, poor infrastructure, and general chaos pushed it to the top of his “never again” list.

Despite the global view he has, the experience here was uniquely negative.

This isn’t just “another bad city review.” It speaks to what travel can really feel like on the ground when you’re in places off the tourist map: fear, confusion, lack of safety, and the unexpected exhaustion that comes with trying to navigate chaos.
