On April 14, 2025, Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket launched an all-female crew into suborbital space, marking a significant moment in spaceflight history. However, Emily Ratajkowski was definitely not happy.

The mission included notable figures such as pop star Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King, and aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe.

While the endeavor was celebrated by some as a stride toward gender representation in space exploration, it also faced criticism for its perceived superficiality and environmental impact.

Emily Ratajkowski’s Perspective

Model and activist Emily Ratajkowski voiced her disapproval of the mission through a TikTok video, labeling the 11-minute flight as “end time shit” and “beyond parody.” She questioned the authenticity of promoting environmental consciousness while engaging in activities that consume substantial resources.

Ratajkowski highlighted the disparity between the mission’s portrayal as a feminist milestone and the realities of global crises, suggesting that such ventures reflect the privileges of a select few rather than genuine progress.

Public Reaction and Broader Critique

Ratajkowski’s comments resonated with many who viewed the mission as a performative act lacking substantive impact. Actress Olivia Wilde sarcastically remarked on the mission’s cost, implying that the funds could have been better allocated. Comedian Amy Schumer mocked the flight’s brevity and purpose, while Olivia Munn questioned the relevance of such endeavors amidst pressing societal issues.

Defending the Mission

In response to the criticism, crew members Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez defended the mission’s intent. King emphasized the inspirational aspect of the flight, particularly for young women aspiring to enter STEM fields. Sánchez invited skeptics to witness the dedication of Blue Origin’s employees firsthand, asserting that the mission was about more than just a brief journey—it was about inspiring future generations.

The discourse surrounding Blue Origin’s all-female spaceflight underscores the complexities of symbolic gestures in the face of global challenges. While the mission aimed to inspire and break barriers, critics argue that true progress requires more than symbolic acts—it demands tangible efforts toward equity and sustainability. As private space exploration continues to evolve, the balance between inspiration and meaningful impact remains a topic of critical discussion.
