Potato chips have definitely become a staple in every household. The yumminess that can be paired with almost anything and everything. If you are a potato chip fan, then you have definitely heard of the long debate of whether you are buying air or chips. Everyone and their mother kept discussing how empty a bag of chips was and that you were actually paying for more air instead. Well, what if you spent enough money on packaging and chips? These are the world’s most expensive potato chips, and you will not believe how much they cost.
Most Expensive Potato Chips
St. Erik’s, in collaboration with Sweden’s National Culinary chefs, introduced an exclusive collection of potato chips priced at nearly $60 per pack. This limited edition consisted of five individually packaged chips, each carefully placed in a black box with certificates of validation. Despite the seemingly exorbitant cost, over $10 for a single chip, the novelty boxes sold out swiftly.
The premium price was attributed to the exceptional quality of ingredients used in crafting these chips. St. Erik’s aimed to offer a luxurious snacking experience by incorporating rare and hard-to-find elements, such as Ammärnas almond potatoes (only found on south-facing hills), onions from Leksand (grown exclusively from May 18 through August 10), Matsutake mushrooms, truffled seaweed, India Pale Ale wort, and crown dill. The combination of these luxurious ingredients earned these chips the title of the most expensive ever sold.
Why Do These Potato Chips Exist?
Chef Pi Le thoroughly crafted each potato chip by hand, using ingredients sourced from various districts in the Nordic region. The truffle seaweed was harvested from the remote Faroe Islands, crown dill was obtained from Sweden’s Bjäre Peninsula, and matsutake mushrooms were gathered in Sweden’s northern forests by cotton-gloved foragers.
St. Erik’s has a history of brewing craft beer since 1859 and the brand is well-known throughout Sweden. They aimed to elevate the eating experience with the creation of the world’s most exclusive potato chips. Moreover, the brand manager emphasized the connection between a first-class beer and a first-class snack. These chips were designed to be enjoyed alongside a chilled glass of St. Erik’s India Pale Ale.
Splurge for Charity
This is surely a hefty price tag. However, St. Erik’s sought to mitigate the expense by saying that all proceeds from the sales of these unique chips would be donated to charity. Additionally, this philanthropic gesture added a charitable aspect to the indulgent snacking experience. It goes along with the product with a higher purpose beyond its luxurious ingredients and craftsmanship.
Are They Available Anymore?
Unfortunately, they are not available for purchase anymore. The company produced a limited run of 100 boxes of the exclusive chips, and all units were quickly sold out. However, each box was accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. This ensured buyers had proof of owning the world’s most unique chips, even after eating them.
The swift sell-out suggested that people were willing to splurge on a snack that promised an extraordinary and indulgent taste experience. The uniqueness of the ingredients and the limited quantity of 100 packs added to the allure of this potato chip collection.
