The photo, taken in 1943 during World War II, has sparked speculation on social media, with some suggesting that the man could be a time traveler due to the anachronistic technology in his hands. The mysterious figure stands out among deployed US soldiers in the image, wearing civilian attire and seemingly engaged with a high-tech device for the era.

The Internet Reacts to the Time Traveler

The photo, originally posted on the Icelandic Facebook group Gamlar ljósmyndir in 2016 by user Kristjan Hoffmann, features a man leaning above a window in the middle of the picture while seemingly using a cellphone. Hoffmann noted the unusual nature of the scene, suggesting that the man appears to be in a trance, standing alone with distinct attire compared to others in the photo. Another user, Karolina Petursdottir, drew a comparison to “Dr. Who” in response to the mysterious figure’s presence.

Hoffman captioned the post with: “I don’t know what to say, I don’t think he’s just talking on the phone… He’s in a stupor, standing alone and wearing a different headdress than the others and a scarf and acting like we would do today.”

How the Time Traveler Became Viral

The photograph, initially shared in an Icelandic Facebook group, gained attention beyond its niche audience and became part of a conspiracy theory video on YouTube titled “10 REAL Cases of Time Travel That Cannot Be Explained.” Interestingly, no one in the discussions, including the Facebook group members, suggested a theory that the man could be a spy for the Axis powers.

Instead, people with more grounded perspectives in the group proposed that he might have been checking his watch. Additionally, some suggested more mundane explanations, such as the possibility of him using a tobacco pipe and scratching his ear during the photo.

Did Phones Even Work Back Then?

Some users questioned the eligibility of the photo. They claimed that even if the man was a time traveler, the phones wouldn’t work due to several reasons. People pointed out that a cell phone wouldn’t work in the 1940s without cell towers.

Some down-to-earth theories emerged, like the guy scratching his ear, checking his watch, or holding a pipe. As for why he is staring at the camera, maybe he was just curious or liked the attention.
