James Sheen, 39, was charged with one count of burglary and two counts related to the transfer of criminal property by Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Additionally, Michael Jones, Fred Doe, and Bora Guccuk, all in their 30s, faced charges. The theft occurred when burglars broke into Blenheim Palace with two vehicles. They stole the golden toilet, named “America,” before 5 a.m. It remains unclear if the toilet has been recovered, and authorities have not provided an update on its status.

What Did the Police Say?

The police stated that removing the golden toilet caused “significant damage and flooding” to the 18th-century Blenheim Palace. This is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its valuable art and furniture, attracting thousands of visitors annually.

What Is the Golden Toilet?

The stolen golden toilet, nicknamed “America,” was fully functional and accessible to guests at both Blenheim Palace and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Originally installed at the Guggenheim in 2016, it allowed visitors at both locations to use it. Moreover, at Blenheim Palace, guests could reserve a three-minute appointment to use the toilet. The Guggenheim Museum reported that over 100,000 people waited in line to use it in one of its gender-neutral bathrooms. The removal of the toilet from Blenheim Palace caused “significant damage and flood” to the historic 18th-century building.
