On Saturday, May 31, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) is set to host a vibrant, all-day festival to mark the reopening of the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing.
Closed since 2021 for extensive renovations, this wing houses the Arts of Africa, the Ancient Americas, and Oceania. The event promises a rich tapestry of global cultures, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in diverse traditions and artistic expressions.
Morning Ceremonies and Afternoon Festivities at the Met
The day kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 9:00 to 10:30 AM, officially unveiling the renovated Met galleries. Following this, from noon to 6:00 PM, the museum transforms into a cultural hub. It will feature traditional music and dance performances from regions such as Senegal and Tahiti. Attendees can participate in live art-making workshops, view Indigenous film screenings, and savor unique culinary offerings.

Culinary Delights from Around the World
A highlight of the festival is the presence of the Queens Night Market, which will serve made-to-order meals inspired by pre-colonial recipes from countries such as Peru, Hawaii, and Sierra Leone. This culinary experience offers a taste of global flavors, bringing together diverse food traditions in one place.
Renowned mosaic artist Manny Vega will lead a collaborative art project on the Met’s plaza. Visitors are invited to contribute to a large diasporic art piece, symbolizing the city’s cultural intersections. Additionally, attendees can engage in hands-on activities like drum-making and weaving alongside master artisans from Oceania and the Andes.

A Celebration of Cultural Diversity at the Met
This festival not only marks the reopening of a significant part of the museum but also celebrates the rich cultural diversity that the Rockefeller Wing represents. By offering free access to performances, workshops, and culinary experiences, the Met aims to foster a deeper appreciation for global cultures among its visitors.
