Disney fans rejoice and keep on believing! Mickey Mouse is coming back, but this time it is stronger (and more terrifying than before). And before that throws you off, it is not technically a Disney release. However, a Mickey Mouse horror movie sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Well, a specific director is trying to make that happen! And while we are used to seeing our favorite mouse in jolly and delightful scenarios, a gruesome one seems intriguing as well!
Why Can This Company Make a Mickey Mouse Horror Movie?
The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain, and independent horror producers are quickly taking advantage of this opportunity. The Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of 1998, often referred to as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, extended copyright protection for works created on or after January 1, 1978, to the author’s life plus 70 years.
For works created for hire, anonymous works, and pseudonymous works, the copyright lasts for 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever is shorter. Mickey Mouse officially made his debut in the short film “Steamboat Willie,” which was released on November 18, 1928.
The Mickey Mouse Horror Movie Announcement
Director Steven LaMorte is set to helm an untitled horror-comedy film based on Mickey Mouse’s cartoon debut. The movie will feature a sadistic mouse tormenting unsuspecting ferry passengers. Additionally, production is scheduled to commence in the spring. LaMorte expressed excitement about bringing a twisted perspective to the beloved character, noting that beneath the cheerful exterior of “Steamboat Willie” lies potential for pure, unhinged terror.
During a press release, LaMorte said: “Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror. It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
Why Mickey Mouse?
Director Steven LaMorte is also known for his work on the horror parody “The Mean One.” It is a dark take on the Grinch and emphasizes his creative approach. It stems from a genuine love for iconic characters. In an interview, he described filmmakers as “kids in the sandbox.” He expresses a passion for exploring and presenting beloved characters in new and unconventional ways. Moreover, LaMorte sees this as a form of homage. He intends to honor and love the characters rather than merely seek to exploit them for commercial gain.
Disney Plans to Fight Back
Disney’s copyright for “Steamboat Willie” and the original versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse has expired. However, the company retains copyrights for these characters’ later, more familiar iterations. Disney has emphasized its intention to protect its trademarks. Additionally, they may take legal action against perceived endorsements or affiliations with its brand.
The filmmakers behind the horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut, directed by Steven LaMorte, are working diligently with a legal team to ensure compliance with the law. They aim to avoid any confusion or questions about their project and stress that their interpretation is a version of a public domain character. It is a scary thrill ride with heart and humor based on the well-known Mickey Mouse.

They are known for the success of “Terrifier 2” ($15 million gross). Additionally, a trailer for another public domain horror-comedy titled “Mickey’s Mouse Trap,” directed by Jamie Bailey, was recently released. Moreover, the film is set in an amusement arcade. It is expected to be released in March, although an exact date has not been confirmed.
