Rebel Wilson, known for her roles in movies like Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids, recently made headlines when she revealed that her salary skyrocketed from $3,500 to $10 million after keeping her heavy weight. The actress, who has been open about her weight loss journey, claimed that her agency “liked her fat” and that her career took off once she gained the pounds.

The Truth Behind Rebel Wilson’s Weight

Rebel Wilson received a $10 million paycheck for her role as Fat Amy in “Pitch Perfect 3” with a clause restricting weight gain or loss beyond 10 pounds. This was a significant increase from her $3,500 earnings for “Bridesmaids” in 2011. Despite the modest pay for “Bridesmaids,” Wilson was content as it helped her join the SAG-AFTRA union.

According to Vanity Fair, Rebel Wilson mentioned in her memoir that her agency preferred her to remain overweight because they earned substantial commissions, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars, for each film where she portrayed the “fat funny girl” character.

The Offer She Got

In an interview with The New York Times, Rebel Wilson disclosed that Universal Pictures initially offered her $9 million for her role in “Pitch Perfect,” but she negotiated for a higher amount, eventually securing a deal in the eight-figure range. Wilson mentioned leveraging the success of the “Pitch Perfect” franchise to her advantage and ultimately requesting an additional million dollars to round the offer up to $10 million.

Rebel Wilson emphasized the significance of receiving an eight-figure offer as an actor, particularly highlighting its importance for women in the industry. She noted that women often hesitate to discuss their earnings openly, unlike their male counterparts who freely talk about receiving $20 million per movie.

The Company Told Her to Stay “Fat”

During an interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Rebel Wilson went viral for disclosing that her contract for “Pitch Perfect” mandated maintaining her current weight, allowing neither a loss nor gain of more than 10 pounds. Feeling confined by her weight to a “multimillion-dollar pigeonhole,” Rebel Wilson decided to undergo a significant transformation, losing 77 pounds during her “year of health” in 2020. However, this weight loss led to backlash from some of her fans, as she revealed to The New York Times.

Rebel Wilson shared that some fans criticized her weight loss, claiming she was no longer funny or relatable. However, she believes that understanding her journey with weight and health, as detailed in her book, would help them comprehend her struggles. Wilson acknowledged her enduring struggle with a sweet tooth as her vice, especially during stressful times, expressing doubt that it will ever fully disappear.
