What would you do if a thief returned your mother’s stolen ashes, but kept your prized custom car? This is the dilemma that one man faced recently. Losing a loved one is a devastating experience, and having their remains stolen only adds to the pain and heartache. However, in a surprising turn of events, a thief made the decision to return the stolen ashes of a man’s mother, showing a glimmer of humanity in a seemingly heartless act. But, the thief decided to keep one souvenir for himself.

Thief Steals Ashes and Custom Car

In the night, a thief stole Larry Carter Jr.’s 2023 limited edition Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak. Carter was surprised he slept through the theft, as he didn’t hear any sounds like the car’s horn or engine starting. He suspects the thief broke the passenger window, rolled the car out of his neighborhood in Winter Haven, and then started the engine elsewhere.

The stolen car held sentimental value for Larry Carter Jr. as it was a tribute to his late mother, Lorena Leonard. Adorned with her name and religious symbols, it served as a reminder of her presence. Carter rarely drove the car, but when he did, it felt like his mother was with him. He even kept some of her ashes in the cupholder, which was unfortunately taken by the thief along with the car.

Thief Returns Stolen Ashes but Not the Car

After discovering his mother’s ashes in his mailbox, Larry Carter Jr. promptly contacted the police. He emphasized the importance of the car and its sentimental value, especially because it was a tribute to his late mother. Feeling incomplete without her ashes, he described a sense of failure. Carter took care to preserve evidence by using his shirt to handle the mailbox, avoiding leaving fingerprints.

Winter Haven police officers conducted a neighborhood canvas. They gathered new evidence on Tuesday in response to Larry Carter Jr.’s report. Although Carter remains hopeful about retrieving his custom car, he is relieved to have been reunited with his priceless possession—his mother’s ashes. However, the chase for the car remains open for now.
