What Do You Need to Know About BTS?

Since their 2013 debut, the South Korean boy band BTS, short for Bangtan Sonyeondan (meaning Bulletproof Boys), has topped the charts with their catchy pop music, collaborated with major industry names, and built one of the largest fanbases known as ARMY.

The Grammy-nominated group BTS consists of seven members: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. Since their rise to fame, they have not only created hits like “Butter” together but also pursued solo projects.

While BTS is celebrated for their collective success and charitable work, each member is also forging their own path and gaining individual fanbases. Jungkook noted in 2018 that, despite their efforts to maintain a unified group, each member has a unique style and role, contributing to their individual prominence while working together for their fans, ARMY.

A Little Introduction to Each Member

This is everything you need to know about the members:

RM

RM, born Kim Namjoon on September 12, 1994, is the leader and main rapper of BTS. Hailing from Ilsan, South Korea, he began rapping at a young age and gained attention in the underground rap scene with names like Large, Stealo, and Runch Randa. He was recruited by Big Hit Entertainment (now HYBE) in 2010, becoming the first official member of BTS.

RM has been praised for his impressive English fluency, which he developed by teaching himself through the sitcom Friends. On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, RM shared that he learned English by watching the show as a teenager, noting that while it seemed like a burden at the time, he now feels fortunate for the experience, thanks to his mother’s encouragement.

Jin

Jin, born Kim Seokjin on December 4, 1992, in Gwacheon, South Korea, is the oldest member of BTS. He is also the first member to complete his mandatory military service, which South Korean men are required to complete before turning 28.

Known as “Worldwide Handsome,” Jin joined BTS in 2013 as one of the main vocalists. He graduated from Konkuk University in 2017 with a degree in acting and art. A self-proclaimed foodie, Jin previously hosted the web series Eat Jin and co-owns a Japanese restaurant, Ossu Seriomushi, in Seoul. In August 2022, during a break from BTS, he took a cooking lesson from celebrity chef Lee Yeon-bok.

Suga

Suga, born Min Yoongi on March 9, 1993, in Daegu, South Korea, gained recognition as an underground rapper and producer before joining BTS. He performed under the stage name Gloss.

In addition to his work with BTS, Suga performs as a solo rapper under the name Agust D, which combines his stage name with a nod to his hometown. He also works as a commercial producer under the name “By Suga.”

Recruited by Big Hit Entertainment in 2010, he trained as a rapper and is now one of BTS’s three rappers, as well as a dancer, songwriter, and producer. He was also the first BTS member to pursue a solo career.
