This program, set to be offered at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, focuses on decolonization, the exploration of alternative ways of knowing, feminism, and anti-racism.

Professor Selove further notes that the MA program will enable individuals to reevaluate the presumption that the Western world epitomizes rationalism and science. This is while other parts of the world are associated with magic and superstition.

What will the Magic Degree Course Focus on?

The university highlights that the course can prepare students for various career paths. It said that the course includes teaching, counseling, mentoring, heritage and museum work, and library positions. Additionally, it will add roles in tourism, arts organizations, and the publishing industry, among other opportunities.

The course provides a range of modules to choose from, such as topics like dragons in Western literature and art, the legend of King Arthur, paleography, Islamic thought, archaeological theory and practice, and the portrayal of women in the Middle Ages.

Magic Degree Course Explained

The MA program draws on the expertise of educators from diverse fields, including history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, drama, and religion.

The university has emphasized that this is one of the rare postgraduate programs in the UK. This is because it enables students to integrate the study of magic’s history with a wide array of other subjects. The course spans one year and features a selection of modules, such as ‘The Western Dragon in Lore, Literature and Art,’ ‘The Legend of King Arthur,’ ‘Philosophy and Psychedelics,’ and ‘Esotericism and the Magical Tradition.’ As part of their studies, students will also be required to complete a dissertation.

Why Was This Course Created?

The university affirms that the program is intentionally designed to cultivate skills that can prepare students for a broad spectrum of professions or even advanced study at the Ph.D. level. It also offers students the opportunity to acquire invaluable transferable skills, including creative thinking, self-motivation, and self-awareness.

According to the University of Exeter, this course opens doors to a diverse range of career paths. These opportunities include contributions to social justice and environmental think tanks. Moreover, it is allegedly offering spiritual and well-being guidance, pursuing careers in writing and media, engaging in the arts, and continuing into further research. Regrettably, there’s no mention of becoming a full-time wizard as a career outcome.
