If you had an active Facebook account from 2007 to 2022 and live in the United States, you might be eligible for compensation. This is mainly due to a data breach by Meta’s social network. A federal judge in California recently approved a $725 million compensation fund regarding Meta. This comes as a result of a privacy class action lawsuit.

Here is how you can fit into this equation.

Am I Eligible for Compensation?

Between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, anyone who was a U.S. Facebook user can file a claim. Moreover, a recent update allows individuals who had Facebook accounts during that time frame to file a claim. This includes deleted accounts as well.

This update particularly impacts those who deleted one or more Facebook accounts between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022.

This lawsuit alleged that Cambridge Analytica, a firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, obtained personal information from millions of users for voter contact.

Meta, formerly Facebook, maintains that it was not at fault, but they agreed to this compensation to benefit the community and shareholders. The money is specifically intended for users who claim that the platform shared their data with third parties without their consent.

How to File for Compensation?

If you want to file a claim, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Facebook User Privacy Settlement Website.
  2. Click on “Submit Claim.”
  3. If by any chance you need to edit your claim, head over to “Filed A Claim? Click Here to Edit Your Claim”.
  4. Enter your Notice ID and Confirmation Code. You will see a “Details” section.
  5. Head over to the next question: “Are you filing a claim for a current account, a deleted account, or a combination of both?”
  6. Select one of the options.
  7. Complete any additional information as required by the website.

What Is The Compensation Amount?

The amount of money you could receive depends on how long you were a Facebook user and how many people file claims before the deadline. Administrative and court costs will be deducted from the total settlement, resulting in a “net settlement fund” from which payments will be made.

Each person filing for a claim will be assigned one point for each month they had an active Facebook account during the specified period. The final payment amount will be determined by multiplying the total number of points you have.
