Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with King Charles III on Sunday, just days after a tense exchange with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

The meeting took place at the Sandringham Estate, adding another layer to Zelensky’s diplomatic push ahead of a major European summit aimed at fortifying international support for Ukraine.

The royal family’s official social media shared an image of the two leaders shaking hands, captioning the moment: “This evening, His Majesty The King welcomed the President of Ukraine, @zelenskyy_official, at Sandringham House,” along with a Ukrainian flag emoji to express solidarity.

The meeting occurred as Britain hosted a European summit focused on military aid and defense strategies for Ukraine, following the heated confrontation between Zelensky and U.S. leaders, which was broadcast live. Zelensky’s conversation with Trump and Vice President JD Vance raised questions about U.S. support for Ukraine, with Trump accusing Zelensky of a lack of appreciation for previous military aid.

On the eve of the royal meeting, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Zelensky in London. Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s unwavering dedication to Ukraine, emphasizing that the U.K. would remain by Ukraine’s side “for as long as it takes.”

A Historic Visit at Sandringham

Zelensky’s arrival at Sandringham sparked excitement, with locals gathering outside the estate, waving Ukrainian flags, as the Ukrainian president made his way to the royal residence by helicopter. The meeting lasted just under an hour, during which Zelensky and King Charles sat down for tea in Sandringham’s Saloon room.

In a statement after the meeting, Zelensky expressed his appreciation for the King’s ongoing support: “I’m very thankful for this meeting and for the unwavering assistance His Majesty provides to Ukraine,” he told reporters. “He’s visited our troops undergoing training in the UK, and we’re deeply grateful for the Royal Family’s continued help.”

King Charles has been vocal about his support for Ukraine, previously describing the country’s experience of “unprovoked aggression” as ‘’beyond words’’ and commending the Ukrainian people’s “extraordinary bravery” in the face of immense hardship.

The two leaders had met once before during Zelensky’s surprise visit to the U.K. in 2023, a meeting that saw the King also visit Ukrainian soldiers being trained in Wiltshire.

Strategic Diplomacy Amid Global Tensions

Zelensky’s visit to the UK comes amid mounting international tension, especially following his tense encounter with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Despite their clash, Zelensky remains committed to securing Ukraine’s future through international partnerships, as demonstrated by his ongoing discussions with global leaders like King Charles and Prime Minister Starmer.

The meeting at Sandringham was less formal than a state visit but still held significant diplomatic weight. Zelensky’s visit is a crucial step in maintaining international momentum for Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression.

The meeting allowed Zelensky to strengthen ties with the U.K. ahead of the anticipated second-term visit of President Trump to the U.K., which has sparked both praise and controversial issue.

In the meantime, Sir Keir Starmer has unveiled a new four-point plan to help secure peace in Ukraine, which includes sustaining military support and building a “coalition of the willing” to defend Ukraine’s sovereignty.
