An 83-year-old Indian man, Satyanarayana Pasupuleti, died unexpectedly during a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to San Francisco.
The medical emergency unfolded mid-air while the plane was flying over Greenland. Despite the efforts of fellow passengers and crew, he was pronounced dead before the plane could land.
Emergency Landing in Chicago
Originally headed for San Francisco, the aircraft made an emergency landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport to handle the situation. The decision was made based on the airport’s superior medical and logistical support. The plane stayed grounded for approximately an hour before resuming its journey.
The Body… Vanishes?
After the emergency landing, officials confirmed the passenger’s body was removed from the aircraft. But here’s where things get murky: the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office in Chicago said it never received any remains from that flight. Meanwhile, Turkish Airlines’ San Francisco staff claimed the body had later arrived on another flight—but didn’t offer concrete evidence.
The result? No official record of where the man’s body ended up.
Identity Confirmed, But Questions Remain
Authorities later identified the passenger as Satyanarayana Pasupuleti. While he was known to have a preexisting health condition, the specific cause of death hasn’t been revealed. With both the airline and local authorities offering conflicting details, the mystery surrounding his whereabouts only deepens.
In-Flight Deaths: Rare but Real
Medical emergencies during flights are uncommon, but not unheard of—roughly one occurs every 600 flights. Actual in-flight deaths, however, are extremely rare and usually due to heart-related issues or preexisting medical problems. The handling of remains in such scenarios is typically well-documented, which makes this case all the more baffling.

Still No Answers
Key questions remain unanswered:
- Where is the passenger’s body now?
- Was there a communication breakdown between Turkish Airlines and Chicago officials?
- Could the body have been misplaced or mishandled during transit?
Both Turkish Airlines and the relevant medical examiners’ offices are reportedly still investigating the situation, but the family and public are left with more questions than answers.
