Millionaire Texas Hunter Gored by ‘Black Death’ Buffalo on Safari

Asher Watkins, a 52-year-old Texas millionaire renowned for his success in luxury ranch real estate, was fatally gored by a Cape buffalo during a guided hunting expedition in South Africa’s Limpopo province on August 3, 2025.

The incident occurred during a trip organized by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris.

A Sudden, Unprovoked Attack in the Safari

Watkins was tracking the massive buffalo alongside a professional hunter and local tracker when the animal charged without warning. The buffalo, weighing over a ton and capable of top speeds of 35 mph, struck him with such force that fatal injuries followed almost instantly.

The safari company later confirmed that the animal was unwounded and that the attack appeared to be entirely unprovoked.
