On September 16, 2025, Utah prosecutors officially charged Tyler Robinson, age 22, with aggravated murder in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In addition to capital murder, Robinson faces multiple charges, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and committing a violent offense in the presence of a child. State officials say they intend to seek the death penalty if he’s convicted.

Robinson is being held without bond in Utah County Jail. He made a first court appearance virtually, where the charges were read. He is being appointed legal representation, as he has been declared “indigent” (i.e., unable to pay for his own defense).

“Three Words” Confession by Tyler Robinson

A central piece in the prosecution’s case is a message Tyler Robinson allegedly sent in a Discord group chat:

“It was me at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this.”

These three short words—“It was me”—appear in messages to friends shortly before Robinson’s arrest. They are being presented by prosecutors as a confession. Other messages allegedly show him apologizing for involving his roommate and expressing regret after the shooting.

Other Evidence & Motive

Prosecutors are presenting additional physical, digital, and testimonial evidence to establish both identity and motive:

  • DNA evidence: DNA matching Robinson was found on the trigger of the rifle used in the killing, on fired cartridges, and on other items connected to the gun.
  • Note and texts: Before the shooting, Robinson allegedly left a written note saying he intended to kill Kirk. After the event, texts to his partner expressed frustration with what he saw as Kirk’s “hatred,” especially toward trans people.
  • Discord activity & cooperation: Robinson’s roommate, who is also his romantic partner, is transgender and reportedly cooperated with authorities, providing digital messages and communications. Discord messages also figure in the case.

Prosecutors argue that Robinson’s ideological beliefs and political views (particularly around LGBTQ+ and trans issues) played a role in the motive. Robinson’s family reportedly told investigators they noticed him becoming more politically active and adopting more progressive views over the past year.

Because Robinson is charged with aggravated murder and prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty, this case carries serious implications. As part of the charges, witness tampering and obstruction of justice are included—Robinson allegedly instructed his roommate to delete messages and remain silent.

The case is being pursued under aggravating circumstances, including that Kirk was targeted for his political expression and that children were present during the shooting. These factors may influence sentencing and whether the death penalty is considered.
