On March 18, 2025, Russia’s defense ministry reported that its air defense units destroyed 46 Ukrainian drones overnight, with the majority intercepted over the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine.
Russia Claims Successful Defense Against Drone Attacks
Russia’s defense ministry announced that its air defense forces had successfully intercepted and destroyed 46 Ukrainian drones overnight. Most of these drones were downed over the Belgorod region, a Russian territory that shares a border with Ukraine.
The ministry shared this information on its official Telegram channel, stating that the attacks targeted multiple regions.
Belgorod Region Faces Heavy Drone Strikes
According to Russian authorities, 41 of the 46 intercepted drones were detected and neutralized over the Belgorod region. This area has been a frequent target of Ukrainian drone strikes due to its proximity to the border.
Belgorod’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, reported that one person was injured as a result of the attacks. Additionally, several residential buildings suffered damage, though the full extent of destruction remains unclear.

Other Russian Regions Also Targeted
In addition to Belgorod, Ukrainian drones reportedly attempted to strike three other Russian regions: Bryansk, Kursk, and Oryol. Russian air defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed drones in these areas as well.
However, the authorities in Bryansk confirmed that there were no reported casualties or significant structural damage.
Ukraine’s Silence on the Attack
As of now, Ukrainian officials have not commented on the reported drone strikes. However, Kyiv has previously acknowledged launching attacks on Russian soil, particularly targeting infrastructure that supports Moscow’s military operations.
Ukrainian leaders argue that such strikes are necessary responses to Russia’s ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian cities since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
The Role of Drones in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Drones have played a crucial role in modern warfare, and both Russia and Ukraine have increasingly relied on them for surveillance, reconnaissance, and targeted strikes.
Over the past year, Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks on Russian military and industrial facilities, seeking to weaken Moscow’s war capabilities. In response, Russia has strengthened its air defense systems to counter these threats.
Previous Drone Attacks in Russia
This is not the first time Russia has reported large-scale drone attacks. In November 2023, Russian authorities claimed to have shot down 53 Ukrainian drones in a single night, targeting regions including Moscow, Kharkiv, and Kherson.
Such incidents highlight the growing reliance on drone warfare and its impact on both military and civilian areas.

The ongoing drone attacks indicate that tensions between Russia and Ukraine remain high, with no clear path to peace in sight.
Both countries continue to escalate their military strategies, and as technology advances, drone warfare is expected to become an even bigger factor in the conflict.
